Study abroad packing list

Tips on Packing for Long-Term Travel (from a hoarder)

Packing for a five month study abroad is no small task, so here are some of my essentials!

{I went to Copenhagen, Denmark, but the packing list can

be used for other countries such as Italy, Spain, England,

France, Germany, Australia, Japan, Argentina, etc.}

Notes:

  • I included school supplies in the packing list since I’m studying abroad, but ignore those if you're just visiting!
  • My travel parameters are that I brought two big check-in suitcases, one carry-on, and a backpack and all of the listed items fit.
  • Layering in Denmark is essential, which is why I packed a few tank-tops, turtle necks & tights, as well as vests I could wear under my jackets.
  • Used backpack and duffel for weekend travel.
  • I usually use my iPad to take notes, but I brought a journal in case some classes didn’t allow technology.
  • LEAVE SPACE IN YOUR BAGS! When you travel, you tend to buy things- whether it’s a souvenir for your family or a unique scarf- you’ll want to leave a little space in your bags to bring back these memories.
  • I stayed in an on-campus dorm during my time studying abroad!

Things my dorm came with:

  • Mini fridge
  • All kitchen utensils
  • Stove
  • Small dining table + 2 chairs
  • Private bathroom + shower curtain + squeegee
  • Two trash cans
  • Electric kettle + toaster
  • Duvet + mattress topper + bed sheets + pillow

WHAT TO BRING

Drawer organizers like these from Amazon were my lifesavers in my dorm back at UT and now they've helped so much in DK bc I don’t have a closet- only a dresser.

Fleece lined tights like these from Amazon were nice for when I

wanted to wear skirt or dresses in the winter.

Athletic shorts to work-out or hike in when it gets warmer- I slept in mine

and also wore them under dresses and as a beach cover up!

Journal - I wanted to make note of fun things I did and write about my experiences!

Power adapters like this one from Amazon were a lifesaver. With just one outlet, I was able to charge my laptop, iPad, phone, Apple Watch, and any other items I had!

WHAT NOT TO BRING

Too many of the same clothes - Although I love leggings, I limited myself to two pairs to keep space in my luggage. The same went for jeans and other basic items.

Expensive hair tools were one of the few things I wish I hadn’t brought. Although my straightener worked well with the power adapter linked above, I would have been better off leaving my blow-dryer at home and buying a new one in Denmark.

Expensive jewelry - As much as I love my vintage jewelry, it wasn’t practical for me to keep it around in my  dorm. I recommend bringing a few daily pieces,  along with some cheap, but classy, earrings like these from Amazon.

I’ve just talked about a few key items, but the rest of my packing list can be

downloaded using the link below! Please message me in the “Contact” section of my website if you have any questions or concerns about moving abroad!

xx, Sanjana
