Sorority Recruitment 101

Sorority Recruitment 101: What to Wear for Each Day

For my new readers, my name is Sanjana Pemmaraju and I am a PC ‘21 member of Kappa Delta at the University of Texas at Austin. Now that I’ve seen both sides of the rush process, here is what I recommend you wear for each of the days of recruitment 2024!

The following pictures and links are obviously all suggestions, but the best advice I can give you is to dress like yourself! Although each school will have rough guidelines of the dress code for sorority recruitment, you should always try to dress as much like yourself as possible. After all, sorority recruitment is all about getting to know the real you!

WHAT to wear for each day of recruitment

Day 0: Opening Convocation & Open House

Opening convocation doesn’t involve any sorority members, so you can dress pretty casual for this. Sneakers, a tennis skirt/athletic shorts, and an athletic tank would be perfect!

Day 1 + 2: Philanthropy Round

Here at UT, PNMs are provided with a recruitment t-shirt, so just wear that and a simple tennis skirt or some nice shorts. These two days will have the most walking, so make sure to wear some sneakers or other comfortable walking shoes.

Day 3: Sisterhood Round

Sisterhood is a bit more dressy than the previous days, so I would wear something like a floral sundress. Your outfit should be light and airy- what you’d wear to a nice picnic! I would also recommend wearing some nice white sneakers or sandals.

Day 4: Preference Round

Preference round is the most formal round of rush, so wear a nicer sundress or a cocktail dress and maybe some sandals or short heels (anything you are comfortable walking in, just a little more upscale).

*Pro tip: avoid wearing white this day because a lot of the sororities have their members wear white!

Day 5: BID DAY!!!

Bid day is usually super hectic, so it’s best to wear something comfortable! Keep in mind that your sorority will provide you with loads of merch, so wear a neutral base! I would go for something like a black tank, white tennis skirt, and some sneakers (my personal favs are these - but just wear something comfy!)

What NOT to Wear

While there isn’t anything specific you should not wear, just make sure to look presentable and put-together. I would definitely not recommend wearing any long dresses- you will feel too hot and it will be hard to walk around.

Sororities won’t judge you based on what brand you're wearing or what color your dress is, but it is noticeable when you haven’t put any effort into your appearance so don’t do that!

Tips + Tricks

Some things to do:

  • Make sure your hair looks nice!
    • This doesn’t require heat- if you have naturally curly hair, style it as you normally would!
  • Put on light makeup
    • Although rush is during the hottest time of the year, especially down here in the South, a tinted sunscreen and some mascara will stay looking nice even when you’re a little sweaty.
  • Carry a small bag
    • I would recommend carrying some breath strips/mints since you will be talking a lot, a water bottle, as well as some perfume, and band-aids in case you get blisters.

Overall

Some of my favorite brands for sorority recruitment are the following:

  • For Opening Convocation, Philanthropy Round, and Bid Day:
    • Lululemon (tennis skirts & align tanks)
    • Goldehinge (tennis skirts)
    • Free People (tanks and shorts)
  • For Sisterhood and Preference Rounds:
    • Altar’d State
    • Princess Polly
    • LoveShackFancy
    • HelloMolly
    • Lulus

While I have provided some examples and suggestions on what to wear, it is always best to use what you already have. You don’t need to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe for just one week of your life! In the end, remember that sorority rush is more than just what you wear- it’s about displaying your true personality and making lifelong friends!
